Why are fertilizers and nutrients important for cannabis plants?
Cannabis plants require specific nutrients to perform important functions throughout their life cycle. These nutrients are divided into macronutrients (needed in larger quantities), secondary macronutrients, or micronutrients (needed in smaller quantities). A deficiency in even one of these elements can lead to stunted growth and a reduced yield.
Types of Nutrients for Cannabis Plants
The nutrition schedule of a cannabis plant varies by growth phase.

Macronutrients (NPK):
- Nitrogen (N): Essential for photosynthesis and the formation of plant proteins. During the growth phase, the cannabis plant needs more nitrogen than in the flowering phase. A nitrogen deficiency is often visible as yellowing of older leaves.
- Phosphorus (P): Indispensable for photosynthesis, protein synthesis, and a crucial component of DNA. Phosphorus and potassium determine the quantity and size of your buds. A phosphorus deficiency can lead to red/purple stems and brown spots on the leaves.
- Potassium (K): Helps regulate CO₂ uptake and plays a role in photosynthesis and energy production (ATP). A potassium deficiency can manifest as brown and yellow leaf tips, curled leaves, and elongation.

Calcium (Ca): Important for cell wall development, stress tolerance, nutrient uptake, and enzyme stimulation. Calcium is an immobile nutrient, which means that deficiencies primarily manifest in new growth.
Magnesium (Mg): Vital for germination, growth, photosynthesis (the heart of the chlorophyll molecule), energy regulation, and the uptake of other nutrients such as potassium and phosphorus. Magnesium is a mobile nutrient, so deficiencies are first visible in older leaves. Calcium and magnesium are often combined in Cal-Mag supplements in a ratio of 3:1 or 4:1 to ensure optimal uptake and prevent deficiencies.
Micronutrients: Needed in small amounts, but just as crucial for plant health. Examples include Boron, Zinc, Manganese, Iron, Molybdenum, Chlorine, Copper, and Nickel. Many plant nutrients are enriched with these essential vitamins for cannabis plants.
Boosters and Stimulators: These products are designed to improve or enhance specific characteristics of cannabis plants. Examples include root stimulators for stronger roots (e.g., Plagron Power Roots), flowering boosters (e.g., Plagron Green Sensation, PK 13-14) for larger and more compact buds, or products that improve taste and aroma (e.g., Plagron Sugar Royal). Enzyme stimulators such as Plagron Pure Zym help break down organic waste and improve nutrient uptake.
The Importance of pH Value
The acidity (pH value) of the water and the growing medium is of great importance, because otherwise nutrients cannot be absorbed, or cannot be absorbed fully.
- For growing in soil, a pH between 6.0 and 6.5 is optimal.
- For growing in coco fibers or hydroponics, a pH between 5.5 and 6.0 should be maintained. You can use pH-regulating products (such as pH minus or pH plus) to adjust the value.
- 100% Natural (Green): Fully organic and focused on the best aroma and taste. pH and EC values do not need to be measured with this. Examples are Alga Grow and Alga Bloom.
- 100% Terra (Red): For fast results and higher yields, with mineral nutrients that are immediately absorbable. Examples are Terra Grow and Terra Bloom.
- 100% Coco (Orange): Especially for hydroponic cultivation on coconut fibers, where the nutrient solution must be precise. Coconut substrates retain water for a shorter time but remain airy. Use Cocos A & B for this. 100% Hydro (Blue): For experienced growers who want maximum control over their hydroponic grow, including determining pH and EC values themselves. Examples are Hydro A & B. Universal (Purple): Additives that can be combined with all the above-mentioned base nutrients. Recognizing and Solving Nutritional Problems It is important to inspect your plants regularly and carefully to recognize problems early. Nutrient Deficiency: Symptoms include dry, yellow, or brown foliage and discolored stems. A deficiency is often easy to resolve by gradually applying nutrients. Over-fertilization: Occurs mainly with synthetic fertilizers and manifests as burnt leaves with yellow or brown discoloration, upward-curved tips, and burnt edges. This requires flushing the medium with inert water and adjusting the pH. Nutrient lockout: Occurs when roots can no longer absorb nutrients due to an excess of nutrients or an incorrect pH balance. The symptoms resemble a deficiency. Here too, the solution is flushing and rebalancing the pH.
